Beginning a long journey
In 1979, the public was presented Grid Compass – a device that is today called “road” computer. In fact, it was the world’s first notebook, and its creator, William Mogridzh, became the first man who tried to translate the ideas of Alan Kay in the final product as closely as possible to avoid technology of the time.
Grid Compass was created at the request of NASA and has been so successful in development, that at the beginning of the 80-ies of the last century were equipped with “space shuttle”. Inside was a computer storage device for cylindrical magnetic disks, which took the capacity of 340 kilobytes (great for that time). Body of the device is made of magnesium alloy, a display that was a flip cover, was electroluminescent. The heart of Grid Compass served as an Intel 8086, operating at a clock frequency of 8 megahertz. An interesting fact of this equipment computer modem to 1200 baud / c. Grid Compass weighed five times less than any other car with similar performance, but had no independent power, and cost about eight thousand dollars.
In an interview, William Mogridzh said of his brainchild: “It is ideally suited military – very strong and so terrible that would be scared of any opponent.”
