With the advent RHONE eliminated the difference between the index registers and accumulators, and the disposal of the programmer was not one, but several registers – batteries.
In our country, in 1948 the problem of development of computer technology are becoming a national priority. They turned around to create a series of first generation computer.
In 1950 the Institute of Fine Mechanics and Computer Science (ITM and VT), organized by department of digital computers to design and build mainframe. In 1951 there was designed machine BESM (Big Electronic Calculating Machine), and in 1952 started its trial operation.
The project initially intended to use the memory on the tubes of Williams, but until 1955 as the memory elements in it were used mercury delay lines. At the time BESM was a very productive machine – 800 op / sec. She had a three-address instruction set, and to simplify the programming widely used method of standard programs, which subsequently initiated the modular programming, application packages. Serially machine was produced in 1956 under the name BESM – 2.
