Projects and realization of machines”Mark – 1”, EDSAC and EDVAC in Britain and the United States, SECM in the Soviet Union have laid the groundwork for the deployment works on creating computer vakuumnolampovoy technology – the first generation of mass-produced computers.
Development of the first electronic serial machines UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) started around 1947, Eckert and Mauchli, founded in December of that year, the company ECKERT-MAUCHLI. The first model machine (UNIVAC-1) was built for the U.S. Census Bureau and put into operation in spring 1951 Synchronous, sequential computer UNIVAC-1 was established based on the ENIAC computer and EDVAC. She worked with a frequency of 2.25 MHz and contained about 5000 electron tubes. The internal storage device in the capacity of 1000 12-bit decimal numbers was performed on 100 mercury delay lines.
Shortly after the commissioning of the machine UNVIAC – 1 of its developers have put forward the idea of automatic programming. She came to the fact that the machine itself could produce such a sequence of commands which are needed to solve this problem.
